States that have "legalized" mary jane have not really done any such thing. They have simply declined to assist the federal government in applying their laws. Feds can still perform the duty themselves.

Seriously, the "sanctuary city" debate and the debate over "legalizing" marijuana locally are the exact same debate. Are states required to do the feds work for them or can they opt out while still not preventing the feds from doing the enforcement themselves.

Yes not not terribly much. Medicare and Medicaid money is still flowing. Same with federal employee health benefits. The challenge is when we need to talk with someone. Lots of agencies have no staff to answer phones.

That's affecting everyone, really. For example the IRS help centers are all closed. There is no one to help people figure out the new tax law for which this is the first year it affects tax filings.

I'll just say that in a world where China, Russia, and India exists as cohesive states I would much rather not end up at their mercy as a disintegrated former USA. Philosophy is great, but force is the ultimate arbiter and I want the ability to hold our own against the bullies or potential bullies.
