From a geopolitical view, the USA needs to prevent Europe from turning to Russia for natural resources. Russia has enough natural gas and uranium to power euro-siberia and reduce dependence on oil to a minimum. This isn't a good thing for the USA, which is allied with the big arab oil states. This hypothetical "Warsaw Pact" would mean complete autarky for euro-siberia, and the USA would no longer be able to influence europe through NATO
