Anime Traps are a middle ground

There is a fandom of women who love to think about gay men. Literally called rotten women I think. Traps appeal to them. But then traps are also tolerated by anime fans at large because they arent "technically" hardcore fags and because they dress cute.

So its a way to appeal to a broader audience without alienating their main audience. It also helps that it gives the women actually good story to watch.
