Israel has actually been helping the US with tunnel detection along the border because Israel has had huge problems with Hamas in that regard so they have some knowledge about tunnel detection that is useful to the US.

I am pretty sure that methane smells like farts since it is the main gas expelled in farts.

However, just taking a hose to the tunnels once you find them is the best. The water collapses the tunnel structure. Gas won't do that.

Either way, filling the tunnels with water is a great way of destroying them. Maybe you will get rid of a single invading party with gas in a tunnel, but you will destroy the entire invasion system if you destroy the tunnels as well.
