The argument that they were founded by a person that sought to get lots of emails doesn't really prove anything. And while the NSA might be able to get in, that could be said of basically any country with an organized government.

I could think of lots of ways to do autocomplete without needing to save any particular search.

Search engines will record stuff in general. If it's AI, it needs to consume data somehow.
