▶ In a draft called "Potential Policy Proposals for Regulation of Social Media and Technology Firms" penned by Sen. Mark Warner and leaked by an unknown source to Axios—the paper starts out by noting that Russians have long spread disinformation, including when "the Soviets tried to spread 'fake news' denigrating Martin Luther King" (here he fails to mention that the Americans in charge at the time did the same). But NOW IT'S DIFFERENT, because technology.
▶ Here's how Warner is suggesting we deal: Mandatory location verification, Mandatory identity verification, Bot labeling (forcing companies to somehow label bots or be penalized despite how unfeasible this is) and Define popular tech as "essential facilities."
▶ Other proposals include more disclosure requirements for online political speech, more spending to counter supposed cybersecurity threats, more funding for the Federal Trade Commission, a requirement that companies' algorithms can be audited by the feds (and this data shared with universities and others), and a requirement of "interoperability between dominant platforms."
▶ The paper also suggests making it a rule that tech platforms above a certain size must turn over internal data and processes to "independent public interest researchers" so they can identify potential "public health/addiction effects, anticompetitive behavior, radicalization," scams, "user propagated misinformation," and harassment—data that could be used to "inform actions by regulators or Congress."

💣 President Trump abruptly walked away from negotiations with North Korea in Vietnam and headed back to Washington on Thursday afternoon, saying the U.S. is unwilling to meet Kim Jong Un's demand of lifting all sanctions on the rogue regime without first securing its meaningful commitment to denuclearization.
▶ “It was about the sanctions,” Trump said. “Basically, they wanted the sanctions lifted in their entirety, and we couldn’t do that. They were willing to denuke a large portion of the areas that we wanted, but we couldn’t give up all of the sanctions for that.”
▶ The president said he trusted Kim's promise that he would not resume nuclear and missile testing, but that the current U.S. sanctions would stay in place.
▶ As for a potential third summit, Trump remained noncommittal.

▶ Trump’s remarks were echoed in a statement from his legal team, in which they claimed “total victory” and “vindication" for the president, saying it marked "an important step forward for the country and a strong reminder that this type of abuse must never be permitted to occur again."
▶ The Trump re-election campaign released a mashup video titled "Time to Turn the Tables!" featuring lawmakers and journalists discussing potential collusion and obstruction of justice. In a statement from Trump's campaign manager Brad Parscale, he claimed the Mueller report had "completely" exonerated the president and warned that "the tables have turned, and it’s time to investigate the liars who instigated this sham investigation into President Trump."
▶ In another tweet, he wrote, “The Greatest Political Hoax of all time! Crimes were committed by Crooked, Dirty Cops and DNC/The Democrats,” topping off his tweetstorm with a video mashup proclaiming “No Collusion — No Obstruction!”
