Collapse of religion, morality, respect for authority, and glorification of degenerative habits by those before them impressed them. They went to copy these behaviors at younger ages to impress those younger than themselves. This help create the issues you speak of now. Luckily however some studies have shown an increase of youth's attention toward "older" things such as religion and tradition which usually naturally combat these degenerative behaviors.

I appreciate the new path Russia takes, moving towards tradition and the old ways. I would like it if the west followed suite, though in some it is unlikely. Poland is much like Russia now, however after living through the horrors they did and experiencing Russian communism first hand, they possibly can't think past those memories.
