Hiya. Just joined in here. Stupid question, but are here any rules to keep in mind?

2018-01-30 13:39:41 UTC [Subverse #shitposting]

Related to that, there's an issue on Steam about artwork and artwork designers which I wrote an article about. I'm not a journalist, but I'd hugely love it if someone with better credientals would take a look into the issue.

2018-01-30 14:58:50 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

(Hey, sorry, I know this is non-relevant: does this place have any rules? I tried asking in <#398973785426100234> )

2018-01-30 14:59:49 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Aight, fair

2018-01-30 15:00:32 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

I suppose it's alright if I bring up some article I wrote? I mean, I'm not here to self-promote (I'm not a journalist), I'd just like if someone with better credientals looked into it or so

2018-01-30 15:04:26 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

You can rob amazon now?

2018-01-30 15:10:38 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Linus Theft Tips โ„ข

2018-01-30 15:22:28 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Doesn't it calculate your inventory when you walk out the door? I mean. It does give some kind of timer on how long you spent inside the store based on Linus video

2018-01-30 15:25:41 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Oh man this Amazon go seems like a terrible idea now when I finished Linus video on it. Yikes

2018-01-30 15:27:49 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Aren't there workers (like security) in the store though?

2018-01-30 15:27:58 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

I mean, I suppose?

2018-01-30 15:28:00 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Yeah

2018-01-30 15:28:38 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

If someone is walking in with a ski mask on and grabbing something quickly from someone elses hand and runs out, I'm pretty sure they'll be alerted, or so I suppose

2018-01-30 15:30:50 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

I suppose they also have to be removed so they can map your face and put it in their databank, otherwise you'd be known as the "sombrero man". (/s)

2018-01-30 15:44:58 UTC [Subverse #shitposting]

Fair

2018-01-30 15:50:05 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

This is btw kinda scary, but I think Tim had some similar thought in a video; what if, in the future, all stores are kinda like Amazon Go and some place deems your thoughts to be "hateful"; they demand Amazon Go or the similar stores to shut down your account, and since you've been going to the stores, they have already mapped out your face, how you move, what you buy on average, how long you spend there etc.

Wouldn't that lead to you being banned from all stores essentially? And because of the algorithm knowing who you are, you couldn't do a fake account or new account

2018-01-30 15:50:28 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Nosedive, kinda.

2018-01-30 15:50:30 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

yea

2018-01-30 15:50:39 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

I think China actually rates people though.

2018-01-30 15:51:17 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

So this is more like Black mirror, but still kinda freaky

2018-01-31 15:52:50 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Alright so yeah, like I mentioned earlier; I'm no journalist (or lawyer), but it would be awesome if someone with better credientals looked into this. Could be a huge thing. And also, possible that every non-artist don't give a shit but yeah.

https://www.minds.com/blog/view/801063297186443264

Basically to summarize it:
There are multiple "Artwork designers" on the Steam platform that takes artworks out of Google, Deviantart and uses non-commercial templates and/or stock footage in their artworks which they sell for CS:GO keys, or money. One of them is this guy who I reference in the article, he's I think one of Steams largest "artwork designers" currently, but he takes his artworks from Google and Deviantart and sells them for 5-25 CS:GO keys.

Now I'm an artist, and I've had to file DMCA claims when people have stolen my identity on Steam and that has been taken care of quickly. But there are probably hundreds of artists like this on Steam: and the friends politics are strong there, protecting those "artwork designers" who are friends etc.

Most designers, after they found out I wrote the article now claims they only charge for "animating" the picture. But they still give no cut to the main artist.

Here are some further proof of them verifying they take from Google, and people covering it up for them when reporting them to groups:

Admins feel free to remove if something.

2018-01-31 15:57:13 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Well, of course not. But I've sent in proof to Valve about their existence, that they even admit to taking artworks from Google and nothing has been done.

2018-01-31 15:58:16 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Only if it's CS:GO related, not profile related, unfortunately.

2018-01-31 15:59:21 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

The artists in question which I'm referring to has not been banned. One got banned for a while, but cmanaged to slither out of it.

2018-01-31 15:59:23 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Oh lemme find one.

2018-01-31 15:59:48 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

I don't know if this is fair use or not.

2018-01-31 15:59:59 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

It certainly don't seem like it.

2018-01-31 16:00:59 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

I'm not entirely sure about that. The artists which have done a DMCA on the artists works when they've found their own there has been able to get it done successfully.

2018-01-31 16:01:13 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Taking someones artwork, cropping it and pasting it on a Steam background doesn't seem like fair use to me. ๐Ÿคท

2018-01-31 16:01:16 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

But I'm no lawyer.

2018-01-31 16:02:06 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

But they didn't create the main image though. The background is a background from the Steam community marketplace.

2018-01-31 16:02:19 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

And they mainly sell the main image as their own.

2018-01-31 16:02:33 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

๐Ÿคท

2018-01-31 16:02:44 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

That's why I'd love if someone with more credientals would look into it.

2018-01-31 16:03:00 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

I'm not a lawyer, I'm not a journalist. But I see an issue there and it's definitely going to blow up if no-one sheds light on to it.

2018-01-31 16:03:19 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

(And as far as I know, it wasn't free use when I looked it up so idk. But we'll see)

2018-01-31 16:04:03 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

It does.

2018-01-31 16:04:13 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

It also lets you watermark them. Which many of the artists have done.

2018-01-31 16:04:18 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

But it's not only related to deviantart.

2018-01-31 16:04:47 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

There are multiple stock photos being used, and this is what Shutterstock support says for instance: https://www.shutterstock.com/support/pkb_sstk_core_customerkb_home?c=CustomerKB%3AVideo&l=en_US
"How can I use editorial content?
Editorial content can not be used for any commercial purpose."

2018-01-31 16:08:16 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

It has a license.

2018-01-31 16:08:47 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

That's why I'm here with this issue. I've been in that (artwork profiles) community for a long time and I've seen under what licenses the artworks being stolen has been posted as.

2018-01-31 16:08:57 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

It is.

2018-01-31 16:16:19 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

It's the default licence on Deviantart I think. So most artworks from Deviantart have it.

2018-01-31 16:25:56 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Yeah. This is the default license on deviantart: https://i.imgur.com/JllgvAr.png

2018-02-05 17:04:21 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

I think this was already discussed somewhere but. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/jan/25/ai-face-swap-pornography-emma-watson-scarlett-johansson-taylor-swift-daisy-ridley-sophie-turner-maisie-williams

I'll go full tinfoil: Imagine. You've been to the amazon store, and because of all the cameras there they now have a perfect image of you: how you walk, what you buy, what you usually wear, how long you usually stay there, how you behave, and your face from every angle imaginable. But you said something that upset a corrupted institution, and now they are out after your blood. A week later, the police comes to detain you, they have video proof you killed someone in another state, where you looked into the camera and how you behaved there etc. It's definitely you, even if you didn't do it. All because of this algoritm.

As far as I know, the algoritm is self-learning, and I've seen the first versions of the porn subreddit related to porn from this algoritm and the latest ones - the latest ones are almost perfect. I'm definitely sure someone will use this AI to frame someone in a bad way - whether it would be a government or a jealous ex who would send your SO a fake clip of you having intercourse with them - this will end so badly.

I paused at the right moment. https://i.imgur.com/uTgB2gt.png
