People are quick to say the police need to be retrained. While there’s always a need for additional resources and training, let’s be frank. Let’s take a look at how the public may need some “retraining” with how they conduct themselves with each other, with law enforcement and in general.

We have grown into a foul mouthed (take a look at some of the comments by others on this post, if they’re not already hidden or blocked ⬇️), cell phone addicted, vulgar, disrespectful, uncivil society with no personal responsibility and the attitude of 'it's the other person's fault', 'you owe me'. A society where children grow up with no boundaries or knowledge or concern for civil society, personal responsibility, values or morals. The parents are missing in action or just don’t care.

When an officer says "Put your hands up," then put your friggin’ hands up! Don't reach for something in your pocket, your lap, your seat. Don’t grab for your cell phone. JUST DON’T DO IT! There's plenty of reason for a police officer to feel threatened, especially in today’s environment! There have been multiple assaults and ambushes on police officers lately and way too many police Officer funerals. Comply with requests from the officer, have your day in court or talk to the supervisor later if you feel you were wronged. Don't mouth off, BE AN A-hole, or fight, or refuse to comply... that escalates the situation and it’s just plain stupid!

Police officers are our sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters. They're black, white, brown, all colors, all ethnicities, all faiths, male and female, they are us. They see the worst side of humanity... the raped children, the bloody mangled bodies of traffic victims, death notifications, the bruised and battered victims of domestic violence, suicides, homicide victims, body parts... day after day. Stuff that most of you will never see., thankfully! Yet, they still continue to try to pull it together and performs their jobs.

They work holidays while we have festive meals with our families. They miss school events with their kids, birthdays, anniversaries, all those special occasions that we take for granted. They work in all types of weather, under dangerous conditions, for relatively low pay in some areas. Yes, they chose this profession. They chose to try to make a difference in society.

They have extensive and continual training, but they are human beings and there’s always room for improvement and cases where there are errors in judgement. They don’t have the luxury of hindsight nor do they have a crystal ball. Some of their decisions are made in fractions of seconds. Fractions! There continue to be unprovoked attacks on them. They become hyper vigilant for a reason; they have become targets. When a police officer encounters any person... any person, whether at a traffic stop, a street confrontation, an arrest, whatever... that situation has the potential to become life threatening. You, Mr & Mrs/Miss Civilian, also have the responsibility of keeping the situation from getting out of control.

Many law enforcement officers are military veterans. They've been in service to this nation a good part of their adult lives, whether on the battlefield or protecting us here at home. They are the only thing that stands between us and anarchy in the streets.

If you want to protect your child, teach them respect... for themselves, for you as a parent, for their teachers, for police officers. Don’t be afraid to tell them “No!” Don’t be afraid to discipline them.

We all know Police officers do not make the laws, they merely enforce them. If you don't like the law, be proactive in the political process. Contact your elected officials. The ones you most likely voted into office and made the laws you disagree with. Don’t understand the role of a cop? Go on a ride along. Attend a citizen’s academy. Participate in use of force scenario/simulator training. See how well you do. Being a social justice/keyboard warrior ain’t gonna get you very far, with anything. The police officer doesn't have, or want, the role of judge and jury. By the way, Officers know they are being recorded and they are also recording you!!

If you get a speeding ticket, were you speeding? Don't blame the cop if you broke the law. Go to court, pay the fine, don't do it again. Take responsibility!! Think it’s a “victimless crime?” Tell that to the person who has to pay a $500 insurance deductible to repair a car window some a-hole smashed or the 4 year old who overdosed when she found her mama’s Xanax or Oxy stash or to the family who just got wiped out because some dude was driving while stoned out of his mind.

As the EMS system is being stretched thin, law
Enforcement officers are responding to more and more medical emergencies and in most cases are first on scene. That police officer may be the one who rolls up with an AED or Narcan dose for your loved one!

It's easy to judge, it's harder to look within oneself and see what your role should be as a citizen, as a responsible person seeing both sides of the issue.
