You do realise that 'assault weapon' could be interpreted to broadly mean any weapon used for assault (which is the commonly thought of definition by most people)..... which is LITTERALLY ALL OF THEM whether they were intended for said purpose or not.

I'm not saying assault rifle is a rubbish term or assault shotgun, just the overly broad term 'assault weapon'. And as such should be explained as such and not used.
