Even then you have to account for higher deaths in childhood driving the average down.

70 years has been pretty standard for a long time. It was women dying in childbirth, high infant mortality, and now curable diseases that seem to lower it. Basically, if you made it to 12 or 13, you had a good chance of living into your 70s.
