This is a personal anecdote, but it is one that consistently repeats itself.

In one course, _global studies, I know, I know,_ we had a discussion about terrorism.

The question was, why do people become terrorists? Are there any influences?

The teaching assistant had asked me if I believed culture had a role to play.

I said I did, if they included religion in their definition of culture - which they did.

One kid - a twenty year old, should be a man but I wouldn't call him that - spoke up, and said that he didn't believe religion had anything to do with terrorism.

I asked him why, he informed me that we lived in a secular world, and that he couldn't imagine anyone honestly dying for something like religion.

And everyone around me, including the teaching assistant, nodded and said that was correct, that was _how the world was_.

And I was the crazy one for thinking otherwise.
