so here I am squatting halfway up the trail, locking eyes with a doe staring at me from the entrance to the grassy patch

and eventually I get the feeling

they don't want me leaving yet

so I come back and do some more circling

a whole buncha crows fly around at some point, I could barely see them but I could hear them all around

a woodpecker showed up on a tree I was actively standing under

and if you know woodpeckers, they're skittish little things

that kind of thing doesn't happen, they don't get that close, ever

eventually the deer just walked into the woods and left me standing there

the big doe still stood there, just outside the circle in the woods

still staring at me

so I walked back up the trail to my car

and I'm just about to get into my car when there's a rustling behind me

from a different random forest path I hadn't noticed before

so I go down THAT trail

I didn't see any animals

but I ended up at this little patch of raised ground with tree branches hanging heavy overhead

and there was a whole bunch of stonework

well, "whole bunch" is an exaggeration

there was this stone brick lump sticking out of the ground, looked like the top of a fence or something

and a little stone table

just on this raised bit of land

in the middle of the woods

behind an abandoned building

at that point I took my pictures and left as quickly as I could without running

I ain't even TOUCHING that table

I got back to my car and took off

and as I'm leaving

I see something

that damn cat that started it all

was at the edge of the woods

I saw it look at me

I swear I saw it look at me

this was southwest ohio

near the indiana border

Every time I tell myself I don’t believe it I hear more

it felt like fucking forever staring them down and slowly pacing around

I went out to eat a few hours ago

I come back

there's three deer in the road in front of my house

Its deer that have had to deal with urbanisation encroaching on their land

Probably stones that some potheads used as seats

That place is probably deurbanising

Animals that live through urbanisation aren't that skitterish

the town I live in can be driven through in less than ten minutes

drive for five minutes

and you're on a winding country road

we don't encroach on the forest

the forest encroaches on us

it's the forest's land, we just live here

Rust Belt isn’t exactly prospering and growing massive developments rn

So I’ve been told

yeah no kidding

next to the abandoned utility building

there's an abandoned railyard

big sheet metal building where they used to load up trains

Population flat in the state but people just move into the cities

there was a big grain elevator and everything

Ergo fewer people to maintain stuff

they took the elevator down, now it's just a big rotting shed
