๐Ÿš€ She worked towards going to space for years, then "everything got canceled."
The U.S. lost another space race: the gender space race. The Soviet Union put the first female in space.
But this local woman hasn't given up on her dream of one day going to space. She said if NASA calls and needs an older woman to go into space for experiments, she's ready for lift off.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Be prepared. The notable scouting motto also applied to Kansas City's disaster response community, which was put to the test in a full-scale mock drill Wednesday.

Kansas City`s medical emergency community met the would-be challenge at the Charles Wheeler Downtown Airport.

In this made-up scenario, metro first-responders greeted a military C-130 aircraft, which, according to the script, flew in 35 patients who`d been involved in an earthquake in Tennessee, and many of these injured people were said to be experiencing symptoms of radiation sickness.

That big military medical flight actually flew in from a military base in Wisconsin, and the doctors and nurses from the metro examined the patients -- both volunteers, who served as the walking wounded, as well as plastic medical dummies -- and then, routed them to local hospitals for treatment.

Emergency medical techs from the Kansas City Fire Department carried patients from the airplane into one of the airport's garages, which was transformed into a temporary triage center, filled with the noise of a busy hospital emergency room.

2018-07-19 15:07:41 UTC

Zach Bradley, emergency manager for the Veteran Health Administration, served as coordinator for that drill that involved more than 200 people. Bradley said the likelihood of such a scenario happening is unlikely, but the same plans of attack are used by medical response professionals during tornado and hurricane recovery efforts.

"One of the things we've done here is to establish a joint information system where the public affairs and public information officers from the various participating facilities have come together," Bradley said.

Radiation sickness experts were strong pieces of Wednesday's puzzle. Dr. Ibrahim Ahmed, a bone marrow specialist with Children's Mercy Hospital, explained that patients undergoing bone marrow procedures often display the same symptoms as radiation illness patients would.

"The risk of infection is up top on everything. Anyone who is needing urgent or emergent care for fluids or antibiotics, it's really important to manage it at the right time," Ibrahim told FOX4.

Kansas City's airports were also put to the test during this drill, in which, the chaotic nature of an emergency was portrayed. Joe McBride, a spokesperson for the city's aviation department, said the metro would be a strong destination for a large influx of patients if a nearby catastrophe occurred.

2018-07-19 15:07:56 UTC

If there's an emergency somewhere else in the U.S., they can get people pretty quick because of the central location. It's not just location, but to have the backbone and infrastructure that we have here with hospitals and federal agencies that are based here," McBride said Wednesday.

Bradley said if this drill went well, local emergency responders would discover their weakness and places they can improve, and opportunities to prepare are priceless.

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ark. - A major supplier of voting equipment in the United States has admitted to enabling its machines the ability to connect to the internet.

Could this have affected voting centers in our region amid growing concerns over Russian hackers impacting U.S. elections?

This letter of admission comes from the company -- Election Systems and Software -- written to U.S. Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon.

ES&S manufactures voting machines as well as the ones that tabulate the final results.

FOX 24 was able to confirm both Benton and Washington county elections offices bought machines from the company in the early 2000s.

ES&S admitted to Senator Wyden it installed the remote access software -- "PCanywhere -- to a small number of customers between 2000 and 2006.

Washington County Elections Coordinator - Jennifer Price - says even though the county's machines do tabulate the results, there's no reason for voters to worry.

"None of the equipment that we use is hooked up to the internet at any time," Price said. "Not the computer we use for election results. Not the equipment that is used for the polls on election night where you cast your ballot. There is no way it could be hacked or stolen or manipulated here."

Price also adds, they always have the actual paper ballots to ensure against any tampering.

In 2006, almost 60 % of ballots cast in the U.S. were counted by ES&S systems.

On August 1st, The United States Department of Homeland Security will conduct a regional meeting with eleven counties in Arkansas - Washington and Benton county included.

Price says this is to specifically address the concerns of cyber security and election security here in the Natural State.

MEEKER, Okla. (KOKH) โ€” Four people are behind bars after a 15-year-old was found starving and sleeping in a barn in rural Lincoln County.

The Shawnee News-Star reports that on July 18 the boy was found after a concerned passerby called police to report something wasn't right at the rural home approximately three miles north and four miles east of Meeker.
At the home, authorities found the boy to be suffering from severe malnutrition and close to death. The Pottawatomie/Lincoln County District Attorney tells the News-Star that the boy hasn't been to school in two years and was supposed to be home-schooled. He also had several broken bones and a head wound that his father had attempted to glue shut.

2018-07-19 15:15:44 UTC

A search warrant of the home on the residence found plenty of food and everyone living in the home were fed. Livestock on the farm were also well fed. The boy was reportedly eating twigs and grass for food.
The boy's father, Jimmy Jones Sr., stepmother, Amy Jones, and two older brothers, Jonathan Plank and Tyler Joe Adkins, have been arrested on child neglect complaints. Jimmy Jones also faces a complaint of child abuse by injury. A 4-year-old was taken from the home by DHS but does not appear to have been abused. The teen will be hospitalized for some time to recover.
