and a tax write-off
^
not just general charity work, they do a lot of open source work which they can not write off
@xorgy Seems like you cut yourself off from much of the internet, doing that. But yeah, its doable
don't confuse charity with good will
they also benefit from open source projects
^
others write code for them
how does google benefit from open sourcing gRPC?
others can now write code for them
for free
virtually nobody is qualified to contribute to these.
@Farscryer I just don't see why people feel entitled to all the benefits of using Google's products, while decrying the side effects.
its not about side effects
its about oh I dunno, not disclosing leads for months
@Farscryer I don't just get to come onto your property, pick the flowers from your garden, toss them in my salad, and then complain about how much water you used to raise that garden.
because they thought their reputation might be harmed
it's also about them modifying the information you see while saying "I'm giving you legitimate search results"
^
@xorgy Because in this, sectioning off the internet because of software seems a lot like censorship
If you don't like what Google does with your private information, don't give them your private information.
there are a lot of vectors along which Google does scummy shit
they have information on people that didn't give them info
sorry but google deserves to burn
like facebook
Sure, but you gave them that information all the same.
further, it's not always clear where that gathering occurs
no
YOU didn't
someone else did
by proxy
remember when it turned out just having an android phone meant that they gathered your info?
@xorgy Now explain that to a 10 year-old in a manner they can understand, and now you have the difficulty in trying to get everyone up on basic computer shit
lmao, trying to not give google information is like playing neverending game of mines
because turning off loc data didnt actually lol
If Google sees your address on some website, what right is it of yours to tell them they aren't allowed to know what they can see with their own two eyes?
no some website
good luck not getting burns along the run
in SOMEONE ELSES PHONE
non public data
or in your phone, after you turn off locdata
@Farscryer It's just retarded, these people just publish things and expect them to be private, they use a product designed to send data, then complain that data are sent.
the notion that Google are just using data people give them is false
its not published yo
if that was the only issue I wouldnt care tbh
get over the published shit
@Farscryer It's like people complaining about people responding to their public comments on Twitter.
I give my phone number to soemone
people can feed corps their info willingly all they want
who has android
now google has my phone number
You just disclosed it to that person, and that person disclosed it to Google.
and can use it
Please address the actual points bering made
and not your strawman
@xorgy I agree, but lets be clear. How many people who no diddly-shit about how a computer functions still use a computer without learning anything more than navigating the OS?
they don't have permission to disclose it
Don't phone people with Android phones then, or tell them to turn off contact sync if it's so important to you.
Sure they do.
strawman
Google is not publishing your phone number
they're using it to serve that customer.
@xorgy How many people actually read the ToS before they install Chrome or whatever.
@Farscryer Not too many, I gather.
@Farscryer I suspect many people don't even read contracts they _sign on paper_.
how many of these articles do we need to pull
@xorgy Hence the problem. People are willingly submitting to stuff they do not necessarily agree with so they can have access to goods they may or may not need.
Even devices that had been reset to factory default settings and apps, with location services disabled, were observed by Quartz sending nearby cell-tower addresses to Google. Devices with a cellular data or WiFi connection appear to send the data to Google each time they come within range of a new cell tower. When Android devices are connected to a WiFi network, they will send the tower addresses to Google even if they donโt have SIM cards installed.
before you admit that google scoops up private, non volunteered data
@Farscryer Society gives people the gift of literacy, out of their own pockets, and in return they get a bunch of people who _could_ read this shit but decide not to.
@xorgy Entitlement is a problem that has only been emphasized, truth.
People having a duty to read and understand the agreements they're signing is the primary reason why I think it is an acceptable function of government to subsidize literacy with money stolen from my corp. and personal income.
@xorgy But so has convenience, too. And that back-and-forth issue causes a lot of problems down the road, especially if the service that prompts both of those mindsets closes itself off behind a contract.
A: This isnt an agreements issue.
B: You cannot use most of the products you would use if you take the time to read the pages of legalese. They are written that way for a reason
Then don't use them.
The legalese is not literal hundreds of pages, for the most part.
google doesn't deserve my reees
there is no aspect of "I bought a phone" that implicitly or explicitly describes a scenario where I do not agree to give information and it's taken anyway
which you have been **ignoring**
If I text somebody in _my_ jurisdiction, they have every right to record it permanently.
and in some cases publish it.
if they send my phone number to Google, that's on them.
you didnt read the articles did you
Which articles?
@LotheronPrime and I both posted articles
dealing with Google explicitly lying about the degree of data tracking involved
okay, I was busy reading Farscryer's messages then, I'll take a look.

Is this w.r.t. them buying tower data from your mobile providers?
You know you can buy that shit too...
umm
no
