It's easier to get a job if you served in a good unit or in the army in general.

Ive swapped around on conscription recently, for a long time i thought it would be a good thing if it was done in the US

When you aren't used to a conscription there would be backlash but if it's been around a while people aren't as opposed. If it was implemented in the US it would take a while till people got used to the idea.

College, alternative services or some other exemption you can get if you have enough money or influence

if you allow gangs to thrive then thats an entirely seperate issue

US already has gangs that thrive inspite of police efforts and pressure

although if a lot of those places stopped voting democrat they may get adequete policing

But the point is, in these poorer neighborhoods the gangs present themselves as protectors and the only way out

but people scream racism if you want to send police to high crime areas

If these gangmembers start getting mandatory military service its flipping a coin

so the military needs to be seen as a viable alternative

They might take the chance to leave and start a better life

Or they may take what they've learned and return to their old ways

as you have the GI bill those poor areas have no excuse

you can choose to join a gang or actually act like a valuable citizen
