If you join the meeting you should be in a situation where you can talk to at least give your action report, and you should be able to listen to the whole meeting. If your work prevents you from doing that, and there's no way you can step out for a minute, then you'll be unable to attend the meetings. I wouldn't be too worried about people listening in on you, though. You should be able to talk generally enough that no one will know. Of course this depends on your job.
