Oh, tim, I have at least two guesses as to why marriage is down. 1. The state has stepped in as the husband, financially (welfare). Having the state as your husband and a boyfriend with a job leaves you better off than just the boyfriend as your husband. 2. The cultural acceptance of sex out of marriage, having kids out of wedlock, and the acceptance of divorce as an option for an unhappy marriage. This ties in with the devaluing of marriage and the death of religion.
