As fine as some of the girls in Japan are, I'm surprised somebody else isn't solving it already.
it's really hard for japanese people to get jobs that are sufficient to support a family without working such long hours that starting a family is impossible.

a quick google says japans abortion rate is significantly lower than the US
so it's not that they're aborting tons of babies; they just aren't conceiving very many.
because they aren't having teh seks
they're just on what would normally be a self-limiting cycle
but because they are capable of postponing the inevitable by taking on debt to buy foreign goods, and using technology to reduce the effect of a dwindling labourforce, it will take a while before the limit is found.
and they've been measured and careful enough as a society to prevent the total collapse that something like this would normally produce.
