Okay this picture cleared it up for me @Gilgamesh The angled stick shadow is because of the curvature of the little hill he's on. The first picture isn't angled, it's foreshortened because it's on a hill

The rock that makes the "due south" shadow is fat, but the shadow is really thin

That's how you can tell it's foreshortened
