All Religions serve three purposes,
1) to answer the "Great Questions" of phylosphy.
2) to indoctrinate people with morals in support of the community ethic
3) provide comfort for people in trying times

Philosophy should be reason and moral based so a fable to support that ideal for beginners is a good thing

But the fable is just metaphor

And when people take it literally we have problems

So in that regards ancient Tibeten religious teachings aren't a literal thing as we would see in today, but spiritual answers.
