I don't know why. I think it was better than Aquaman. My eyes were glued to the screen for 2hrs without once being taken out of the story with questions like, "How did they get on that plane? How did they get out of the middle of the desert? How did they get on a boat off the coast of Sicily?" Alita's plot was very tight. The 3rd act was a bit rushed. But the characters were solid. None of this "love interest" characters whose purpose is only to exchange witty banter with the lead.
