Umm idk if you guys realize this but Earth is really big
really? how big? what is the diameter?
So it’d be hard to capture the entire Earth in one photo
12,000 km
how was that diameter determined?
Placing 2 wells 800 km away from each other
When the Sun rises, it’s light reaches the well at an angle of 7.2 degrees
and what assumptions must go into the calculation?
A sphere is 180 degrees so
180 degrees? a sphere?
so 90degrees is a half sphere?
and...are you saying that one assumption that goes into the calculation is that earth is a sphere?
360 sorry
lol
oh. so one assumption that goes into the calculation is that Earth is a sphere?
and the sun?
what assumptions about the sun?
Do you understand geometry?
can you please answer the question first?
One one well was illuminated at a time, once a year while the Sun was directly over head
On a flat Earth you’d expect both wells 800 km away to be lit up at the same time but it was not
yes or no?
It’s not an assumption, the angle of incidence showed that Earth was a sphere
that is not true
and you know it
what assumptions must be made regarding the sun?
do you know?
7.2 degrees is about 1/50th the arc of an entire circle
So 800 km had to be 1/50th that of Earth
what assumptions must be made regarding the sun for this calculation?
Multiplying by 50 gives 40,000 km which is circumference not diameter, but from there it’s easy to determine
you aren't going to answer are you? 🙂
I'll help you
Let me finish first lmao
oh great
Questions can be saved until the end 🙂
So
Since it was determine that an angle of incidence in 1/50th the arc of a circle, simply dividing the circumference by pi (40,000 / 3.14) = 12,738
Pretty close to the actual number
what do you mean close to the actual number? that's what we are trying to measure. where did the "actual number" come from?
