The experiment consisted of suspending a wooden rod with small weights on either end from a thin wire. Two large weights were placed nearby at different angles to the frame supporting the wire, rod and small weights. The independent variable, the one the experimenter controlled, was the angle between the frame and the large weights.
The dependent variable, the one the experimenter observed, was the angle the rod twisted to as a result of the gravitational attraction between the large and small weights.
