Second of all, some plane routes make ansolutely no sense

They are there to make an imaginare picture of the "ball earth"

The air is less dense at the front of the plane. Say it went straight for a mile, there would be a significant difference and the plane would fall roughly back to what it was cruising at unless you’re accelerating
