A larger slice of the population now have no real passion or drive to accomplish things that are beneficial to both their person and society more broadly. The malaise and apathy that result from this have resulted in higher rates of depression and co-morbid mental disorders, as well as a rise in suicides. So while an individual *may* be able to go on fine without religion, society tends to suffer without it.
