I'm new to understanding the US relationship with them. Honest question: Why are we supporting Israel?

i consider myself a christian. and i'm very torn on the israel issue. with my faith/religion is so pro-israel, yet it seems like we are giving them shitloads of money for no reason. it really causes conflict inside of me.

they keep getting so much money all the time. i know we give out a bunch of foreign aid, but we shouldnt be splashing the kind of money we do on them. they are efficient themselves and dont need our money
