High speed, high torque industrial equipment snagged the ring, it got stuck, and the skin was the weakest link so it gave out.

Clip it below the nail, slide off the finger skin rigatoni, then treat it like a burn with synthetic skin.
Keep a close eye on it for a few weeks and it should be fine. He'd need OT, and it'll always be stiff and nasty looking, but the finger should work.
Even the rubber/silicone rings made for this purpose can still fuck your shit up I'm fairly certain

We had CNC machines for the 1 ton plastic rolls we worked with, guy got his wedding ring snagged and lost it all in the machine and the end of his finger.
thats why you dont wear long sleeves, chains, watches, rings and whatever else im forgetting around the machines kids
