Wood is better if you're putting enough rounds through the gun to make it hot, mainly because the furniture is thicker. A polymer hand guard with a decent gap between it and the barrel would do just as well, but it's not nearly as good looking. Also, poly parts vary wildly in quality and material properties, wood is pretty average unless you get weird types of wood.

Wood needs to be treated periodically, swells and shrinks with humility, and.. cracks easily.
