and play in a 5e group (running a 2e module the DM adapted to 5e: the gates of firestorm peak) that started with shadowrun 5e (but the DM burned out, and started to prep degenesis)

2019-11-04 07:03:53 UTC

and we're pretty much playing 5e to pass the time until he feels ready to run degenesis

2019-11-04 07:04:43 UTC

as much as i hate 5e for being an unambitious system that forces you to pretty much play your character as an icon of their class

2019-11-04 07:05:17 UTC

it's been pretty ok playing as a half-elf swords bard which i've literally only selected illusion and enchantment spells with

2019-11-04 07:06:28 UTC

if not mostly because i get to use my favorite magic schools (even if they fucking murdered/cut some of my favorite spells; rest in peace shadow evocation and phantasmal killer)

2019-11-04 07:06:40 UTC

and the DM is good, and the story is interesting

2019-11-04 07:07:53 UTC

I used Phantasmal Killer on a wraith once

2019-11-04 07:07:55 UTC

It was rad

2019-11-04 07:08:02 UTC

what system though 🤔

2019-11-04 07:08:13 UTC

Pathfinder, not sure what edition

2019-11-04 07:08:18 UTC

what year

2019-11-04 07:08:50 UTC

if it was before summer this year

2019-11-04 07:08:52 UTC

then 1e lol

2019-11-04 07:08:57 UTC

Well then yeah

2019-11-04 07:09:02 UTC

1e

2019-11-04 07:09:08 UTC

Cause it was years ago

2019-11-04 07:09:53 UTC

technically speaking, that shouldn't have been allowed

2019-11-04 07:10:02 UTC

Indeed

2019-11-04 07:10:11 UTC

The GM wasn't on the ball at that point in time

2019-11-04 07:10:22 UTC

Spawned a wraith as a fuck you spooky moment for the party

2019-11-04 07:10:45 UTC

And I just yeeted it with a spell that shouldn't have yeeted it

2019-11-04 07:10:58 UTC

it can be fun or be a neat moment if not all rules apply sometimes

2019-11-04 07:11:10 UTC

theatric, rather

2019-11-04 07:12:02 UTC

i mostly play pathfinder with my group with spheres of power/might, ultimate psionics, and few other supplements

2019-11-04 07:12:14 UTC

Well the thing about the rules, is that if it doesn't break the game to get rid of it, and the rule is actually getting in the way of people having fun, it should be fine to be bent a little or gotten rid of

2019-11-04 07:12:22 UTC

yea

2019-11-04 07:12:35 UTC

not all rules are good to enforce

2019-11-04 07:12:57 UTC

and it's pretty much best to have the rules serve your group rather than your group serve the rules

2019-11-04 07:13:07 UTC

Exactly

2019-11-04 07:13:12 UTC

without making the game unplayable or to a point that it's not even a game

2019-11-04 07:13:20 UTC

There should be enough to make it so that they don't do things like blow up the sun or whatnot

2019-11-04 07:13:50 UTC

But not obstructive where they die of dysentery because a rat brushed up against them while they slept or whatever

2019-11-04 07:14:14 UTC

yea

2019-11-04 07:14:26 UTC

unless they like super rules-heavy games with rules that cannot be bent

2019-11-04 07:15:56 UTC

although, being able to negotiate with a person about what you can actually do within the confines of the game

2019-11-04 07:16:08 UTC

is a huge advantage to tabletop games

2019-11-04 07:16:15 UTC

Indeed

2019-11-04 07:16:33 UTC

like, in a video game, what's coded in is the end-all be-all of what you can do

2019-11-04 07:16:38 UTC

(unless you mod the game)

2019-11-04 07:17:42 UTC

and even the most choice-filled roleplaying video games have arguably less choice potential than a tabletop game

2019-11-04 07:17:51 UTC

even if they're both the 'same' system
