and play in a 5e group (running a 2e module the DM adapted to 5e: the gates of firestorm peak) that started with shadowrun 5e (but the DM burned out, and started to prep degenesis)

and we're pretty much playing 5e to pass the time until he feels ready to run degenesis

as much as i hate 5e for being an unambitious system that forces you to pretty much play your character as an icon of their class

it's been pretty ok playing as a half-elf swords bard which i've literally only selected illusion and enchantment spells with

if not mostly because i get to use my favorite magic schools (even if they fucking murdered/cut some of my favorite spells; rest in peace shadow evocation and phantasmal killer)

and the DM is good, and the story is interesting

And I just yeeted it with a spell that shouldn't have yeeted it

it can be fun or be a neat moment if not all rules apply sometimes

i mostly play pathfinder with my group with spheres of power/might, ultimate psionics, and few other supplements

Well the thing about the rules, is that if it doesn't break the game to get rid of it, and the rule is actually getting in the way of people having fun, it should be fine to be bent a little or gotten rid of

not all rules are good to enforce

and it's pretty much best to have the rules serve your group rather than your group serve the rules

without making the game unplayable or to a point that it's not even a game

There should be enough to make it so that they don't do things like blow up the sun or whatnot

But not obstructive where they die of dysentery because a rat brushed up against them while they slept or whatever

unless they like super rules-heavy games with rules that cannot be bent

although, being able to negotiate with a person about what you can actually do within the confines of the game

is a huge advantage to tabletop games

like, in a video game, what's coded in is the end-all be-all of what you can do

(unless you mod the game)

and even the most choice-filled roleplaying video games have arguably less choice potential than a tabletop game

even if they're both the 'same' system
