If you remember a few years back the conservatives throwing a fit about Booker vs. DuBoise being taken off the AP and out of the curriculum? That was the critical post-Civil War debate. Booker thought success came from education, hard work, and civic pride. DuBoise thought it came from political power. DuBoise died in Liberia and the University Booker built is the oldest TBC in the US.
If I had my way Booker's *Up from Slavery* would be required reading.
