Here's my theory on why neither Toyota or Subaru will increase the power:

They're contractually obligated to not compete against each other in some way, and have to come to an agreement to offer a more powerful version at the same time so as not to encroach on each others profits.

2018-09-02 22:20:32 UTC

the car is literally built by subaru regardless of the badge on it

2018-09-02 22:21:47 UTC

the most likely reason they're not putting a turbo on it is because toyota don't want it to get in the way of the new... "supra"

2018-09-02 22:21:53 UTC

or they just don't care about it

2018-09-02 22:22:15 UTC

If that were true, Subaru would have added a turbo already.

2018-09-02 22:22:35 UTC

not when it's the same car, it's a joint venture

2018-09-02 22:22:53 UTC

you won't get one manufacturer offering literally the same car if the other doesn't also offer that

2018-09-02 22:23:25 UTC

subaru may not want their own wrx sales impacted either

2018-09-02 22:23:39 UTC

unlikely since it's in a different sector

2018-09-02 22:23:40 UTC

but still

2018-09-02 22:25:05 UTC

So that leads back to Toyota having a contract with Subaru, and preventing them from possibly encroaching on their Supra sales?

2018-09-02 22:25:44 UTC

I mean there's no doubt that subaru and toyota have a contract since they codeveloped the car and toyota outsource the production to subaru entirely, and it has a subaru engine

2018-09-02 22:26:42 UTC

All I'm saying is, that it's not out of incompetence that the two of them haven't added a turbo or supercharger yet.

2018-09-02 22:28:18 UTC

I don't think it comes down to incompetence at all, my expectation is people high up in toyota are flat out rejecting any kind of performance vehicles under their brand

2018-09-02 22:28:52 UTC

considering the new supra is basically a BMW and toyota have already "suggested" 2jz swaps should be done to the bottom engine model

2018-09-02 22:29:18 UTC

it's almost an admittance of failure, and I'm betting it's because toyota is pushing to be eco friendly and performance vehicles don't fit their company profile

2018-09-02 22:31:04 UTC

The Koreans seem like they're overtaking the Japanese these days in product range...

2018-09-02 22:31:11 UTC

It's because it would compete with the WRX

2018-09-02 22:32:18 UTC

That's literally why lol the frs is the Miata competitor the WRX is the next tier up

2018-09-02 22:33:06 UTC

You didn't even answer the question, or stay relevant lol

2018-09-02 22:33:23 UTC

What, why the 86 is slow as shit?

2018-09-02 22:33:46 UTC

Everyone who buys them immediately rices them anyway

2018-09-02 22:34:08 UTC

Why *either* car is slow as shit, and why they *refuse* to add more power. The car doesn't compete with the Impreza whatsoever

2018-09-02 22:35:14 UTC

Because it would ruin the handling they market so hard

2018-09-02 22:35:18 UTC

For one

2018-09-02 22:35:31 UTC

More power means more weight

2018-09-02 22:38:54 UTC

Anyways

2018-09-02 22:39:09 UTC

I call bullshit

2018-09-02 22:39:15 UTC

Between Toyota and Subaru the 250+ hp gap is more than filled by other cars

2018-09-02 22:40:51 UTC

You have..... the WRX. At 300hp, with AWD and a sedan.

The BRZ is 200hp (with 150tq). Put on a small, simple supercharger (what, 20lbs max?) And it'd be ideal.

2018-09-02 22:41:09 UTC

Also, lawyers. A lightweight 250-300hp rwd coupe is bad news for automakers trying to keep a family car image

2018-09-02 22:41:16 UTC

superchargers are a nope because of european emissions

2018-09-02 22:41:25 UTC

The WRX isn't 300hp

2018-09-02 22:41:34 UTC

It's 304, dude

2018-09-02 22:41:44 UTC

The WRX STI is which is an entirely different market segment

2018-09-02 22:42:05 UTC

See GTI vs Golf R, Fucus ST vs RS, etc

2018-09-02 22:42:17 UTC

Oh, w/e. Still gay.

2018-09-02 22:42:26 UTC

The base model WRX makes 268

2018-09-02 22:43:02 UTC

Or a GTI with a mild tune in other words...

2018-09-02 22:43:07 UTC

Ahhh.... so more power in the BRZ would actually make it *better* than the WRX. Lighter, RWD, same power.
