You can test the surface, and the surface is actually gold

you can get gold testing kits

The other metal is hidden inside

but you scratch your gold

and also it could be hollow inside

I imagine it would have to be at least as heavy as gold or heavier, or you could do an easy weight/volume test to find it's not solid gold, for example
