Race itself is an informal category, taxonomically speaking

that's not how race really works, races are not equal to subspecies except insofar as they are classifications 'below the species level'

it's groups isolated for some time, developing certain traits common (or more common) to them, divergent from other groups

in that sense they are subspecies, but that isn't really how the word is used
