i don't think they care
tbh
@JHWH I think you misread, I said not being an idiot.
dont ask them why theyre laughing because they wont be able to explain it
just let them laugh
my bad, then just dont call them jackie chan and generally dont be an idiot.
I want to ask that other stuff eventually, but I know you need to break the ice first.
And that if they still have close family in China I'd probably abort.
in my experience they are either chomping at the bit to tell westerners how they feel, or they won't reveal their opinions until they are on their deathbed
there is no in between
the only chinese friend i have is from hk lol
@bentech did he have opinions about the umbrella movement?
nah he doesnt have many ties with hk
Here's a get-rich-quick scheme that might work.
1. Move to a US state where employees are protected from discrimination based on their political affiliations and activities.
2. Apply to a job you're qualified for to a Chinese employer wearing clothes supporting Taiwan, Tibet, etc. They probably don't know about political discrimination laws.
3. After they don't hire you, sue for discrimination.
@(import (srfi 151)) as a chink myself, i personally love it when westerners take their time to learn my language
"hello kneee howwww ching ching chaang"
it's so cute
i highly recommend you do this
Mandarin is hard though. Can I just half ass it and memorize some phases?
for real, id just speak english if they can too tbh
i think xiexie (thank you) is all you need to know if they can speak english
I'll try to excel in good phonology instead.
@(import (srfi 151)) ask if they're japanese
this tbh
Wouldn't that be bad?
not if you follow up by saying you're a total baka
make sure to ask what their favourite anime is
tell them they look like anime
Ohaio gozaimas which anniemay is your favorite plox tell????
Going to take language class at my uni. Which one should I take
They might offer it tbh
Honestly might be the most useful too
You can probably get by with conversational Hindi
Conversational Japanese or Chinese won't get you anywhere
Hmm. Interesting
Maybe I'll just start learning kanji
Do double duty
useful languages
China is hell to deal with so people tell you to not learn it
