Most people with panels are still completely on-grid. So, if the grid goes down...
about the only good it seems to do is save on your electric bill
which is actually a pretty good deal when your bill is less than $3 a month... except for the part where all the other benefits people assume they get don't happen
I guess you would need to buy a generator with those solar panels if you want to store the electricity on site
I'm not sure, my wife's family bought the solar panels before I moved in so I don't know much about it - I assume so, though
