People will use whatever it really doesn't matter

2019-11-20 14:29:29 UTC

we were given the spiel on vim vs emacs and how it largely wont matter in the end as long as it gets the job done :^)

2019-11-20 14:29:40 UTC

if you're an actual pro you'll have started to make your own utilities and tools no matter what you use anyway

2019-11-20 14:29:58 UTC

I used Vim for a long time

2019-11-20 14:30:10 UTC

but there's just lots of things that pissed me off that got me to switch to emacs

2019-11-20 14:30:25 UTC

Bram can go suck a BBC

2019-11-20 14:33:53 UTC

At my university they start people off with Code Blocks

2019-11-20 14:33:58 UTC

it's garbage I hate it

2019-11-20 14:34:19 UTC

I took the effort to just learn how to compile from terminal

2019-11-20 14:34:46 UTC

and was writing in terminal too until my terminal applications decided they didn't like displaying things properly

2019-11-20 14:35:03 UTC

wat

2019-11-20 14:35:22 UTC

I have no idea I didn't want to bother with it though

2019-11-20 14:35:55 UTC

You can change encoding and input stuff on the fly, just depends on the emulator.

2019-11-20 14:36:03 UTC

maybe that was it

2019-11-20 14:36:12 UTC

but if you're talking about using your editor in the term then..

2019-11-20 14:36:17 UTC

there's lots of reasons to use the GUI

2019-11-20 14:36:40 UTC

because of baggage from the terminals.

2019-11-20 14:37:31 UTC

only reason I'm using VS Code is because of the screen split options available

2019-11-20 14:37:45 UTC

I don't use it for much more than text editing

2019-11-20 14:37:58 UTC

Describe what you mean by "screen split"

2019-11-20 14:38:12 UTC

horizontal and vertical split views

2019-11-20 14:38:21 UTC

so just a split window

2019-11-20 14:38:21 UTC

and multiple tabs between the split views

2019-11-20 14:38:32 UTC

vim and emacs both have that 😉

2019-11-20 14:38:41 UTC

VScode just runs like shit

2019-11-20 14:38:58 UTC

just download more ram

2019-11-20 14:39:17 UTC

It's not the ram it's the electron

2019-11-20 14:39:33 UTC

kind of wish they'd rewrite it

2019-11-20 14:40:05 UTC

I'll go back to what I said yesterday.

2019-11-20 14:40:17 UTC

If I wasn't already an emacs fag I'd be 100% on jetbrains products.

2019-11-20 14:42:22 UTC

if you have an edu email you can get everything for like $25 bucks

2019-11-20 14:43:22 UTC

oh I guess they're giving if for freenow

2019-11-20 14:43:26 UTC

interesting

2019-11-20 14:43:44 UTC

I actually told some of my classmates about this

2019-11-20 14:43:54 UTC

a friend recommended me JetBrains stuff

2019-11-20 14:44:26 UTC

took a bit of work to get initially setup on Windows

2019-11-20 14:45:28 UTC

I don't use windows as a workstation so

2019-11-20 14:52:03 UTC

Penguin Boi?

2019-11-20 14:52:26 UTC

No I use OpenBSD so I can avoid all penguins
