try to buy from the owner, look up carfax or w/e.

As far as brand? I'd go with toyota or ford. Their engines are tough, even if you are forgetful with changing oil on time, they will survive better than other motors.

The problem is the model could be great but the owner could've trashed it and fixed it up...

or buy like the cheapest cheap corolla new for like 18k
