unless you have an SLS/SLA printer, which i don't and until the wanhao d7 is a bit more developed can't afford

2017-06-14 18:28:26 UTC

what about

2017-06-14 18:28:35 UTC

shapeoko

2017-06-14 18:28:44 UTC

solid, not too expensive

2017-06-14 18:28:47 UTC

and no printed parts

2017-06-14 18:28:51 UTC

i've considered it

2017-06-14 18:29:01 UTC

it's a pretty good option

2017-06-14 18:30:13 UTC

but then i've seen how some of the chinese routers in the $400-$600 range perform after simply replacing the spindle, and it's pretty impressive

2017-06-14 18:30:32 UTC

isn't it the price range of shapeoko

2017-06-14 18:30:40 UTC

shapeoko is $1100

2017-06-14 18:30:59 UTC

the big ones a few hundred more

2017-06-14 18:31:09 UTC

thought it was cheaper

2017-06-14 18:31:18 UTC

maybe I was thinking of something else

2017-06-14 18:31:22 UTC

$1100 is cheap for cnc stuff

2017-06-14 18:32:07 UTC

it was fkn groundbreaking honestly, cnc machining went from six figure price tags and diy and no middle ground to an off the shelf western router for a bit over a thousand bucks

2017-06-14 18:32:24 UTC

the real cost is still the tooling though

2017-06-14 18:32:35 UTC

even chinese tooling worth bothering with is expensive

2017-06-14 18:33:47 UTC

there's cheap "high speed steel" tooling, but it will break and ruin your day

2017-06-14 18:34:53 UTC

also

2017-06-14 18:35:05 UTC

what are the printers you own?

2017-06-14 18:35:36 UTC

i have a heeeeavily modified wanhao duplicator i3 and i have a kossel

2017-06-14 18:36:16 UTC

would not recommend the kossel, i have yet to really get it dialed in, was fun to build but cartesian robot is just better

2017-06-14 18:36:34 UTC

no effector tilt or anything, no ultra-precise measurements with calipers i can't afford required

2017-06-14 18:37:10 UTC

trivial to add another extruder if you want and don't mind sacrificing some x axis for it

2017-06-14 18:38:13 UTC

who bought ifive 4s tablet here

2017-06-14 18:38:17 UTC

i remember someone got it

2017-06-14 18:38:23 UTC

is it good?

2017-06-14 18:38:47 UTC

this i3 looks solid

2017-06-14 18:39:26 UTC

the main downside to the wanhao i3 is the melzi board it uses, you have to replace that if you wanna add a second extruder

2017-06-14 18:40:02 UTC

but the frame is pretty fkn solid out of the box and if you want you can reinforce it with community-made mods until it makes $2000 pritners look flimsy and jiggly

2017-06-14 18:40:15 UTC

replace the stock nozzle cooler

2017-06-14 18:40:18 UTC

what's the board?

2017-06-14 18:40:27 UTC

some custom thing?

2017-06-14 18:40:52 UTC

micro swiss makes a replacement hotend for it that'll let you print nylon and polycarbonate and (do not do this without a permanganate air scrubber please) POM

2017-06-14 18:41:12 UTC

it's a pretty common low-end board that basically just combines the arduino and stepper drivers onto one board

2017-06-14 18:41:19 UTC

ramps?

2017-06-14 18:41:27 UTC

it's like shitty ramps kinda yeah

2017-06-14 18:41:33 UTC

it's the next thing i'm replacing

2017-06-14 18:41:35 UTC

so it's even worse than ramps

2017-06-14 18:41:47 UTC

it works fine if you only need the one extruder

2017-06-14 18:42:02 UTC

also: they advertise 0.1mm layer height, this is false
