the icons were also problematic

The default one are good, installed apps have bad icons but that can be fixed by downloading the Google play icon pack on the miui forum

it doesn't help that miui wants to do some dumb shit to square up every icon when I have a square icon pack from play

Hell on big devices you can even change the icon layout from 4 horizontal to 5

... You don't have the good one then? I've had no problems for icons

This is very confusing, I talked about the launchers a few weeks ago and people seemed to like the default one

Meizu default launcher is gore though.

its not a bad launcher, but I've used nova for the last 4 years and it's very hard to find something that comes close to replicating the way I use my phone
