This

2018-06-05 08:13:16 UTC

also the fact that optimus causes more harm than good in most operating systems outside of windows

2018-06-05 08:13:27 UTC

Wat

2018-06-05 08:13:32 UTC

2018-06-05 08:13:45 UTC

Its just an fps limiter

2018-06-05 08:13:58 UTC

That also downclocks the GPU to save power

2018-06-05 08:14:13 UTC

no that doesn't have anything to do with optimus

2018-06-05 08:14:17 UTC

that's just the driver doing that

2018-06-05 08:14:28 UTC

Its basically the equivalent of pressing the eco button on a car

2018-06-05 08:14:35 UTC

But you need the oem one ofc

2018-06-05 08:15:23 UTC

@Goz3rr actualy gpus with optimus have long history of problems relating their use on linux/mac/bsd

2018-06-05 08:15:32 UTC

and even some older windows versions

2018-06-05 08:15:41 UTC

But I mostly dont use the GPU at all while using the battery
Intel hd 530 does the job and If i really wanted to play fortnite I could just turn on optimus and shift

2018-06-05 08:15:44 UTC

wouldn't know about that, and iirc optimus is only supported on 7 and up

2018-06-05 08:15:56 UTC

not just drivers but the optimus is part of how those things are wired and how they can toggle parts unnecessary off

2018-06-05 08:16:16 UTC

It's a driver that communicates with hardware property's

2018-06-05 08:16:23 UTC

Its not needed but its handy

2018-06-05 08:16:30 UTC

nvidia optimus includes some hardware too

2018-06-05 08:16:51 UTC

since only one gpu can be in control of the video outputs

2018-06-05 08:17:09 UTC

You can use the full sillicon of the GPU but turning several parts of it is left to a driver

2018-06-05 08:18:20 UTC

Optimus does more good than harm just like @Goz3rr pointed out

2018-06-05 08:18:49 UTC

Also
>running a modern GPU with anything older than windows 7

2018-06-05 08:38:36 UTC

as there is some stubborness here

2018-06-05 08:38:49 UTC

https://lambda.sx/F4u.png now that im on proper computer i can happily argue about hardware

2018-06-05 08:39:05 UTC

i didnt feel the need to hilight that >has both software and hardware components

2018-06-05 08:39:49 UTC

which later ones make/made(havent checked fix for it due not my problem) certain operating systems and situations broken

2018-06-05 08:41:12 UTC

so gpu sitting idling and still using power vs no power to gpu == its obviously does more harm than good in our scenario where there is no use for it in "daily browsing computer"

2018-06-05 08:42:37 UTC

you nvidia fanboys can argue as much as you want but optimus is(was?) broken/useless for most average users

2018-06-05 08:42:56 UTC

it sounded cool in marketing speeches tho

2018-06-05 08:43:26 UTC

and it somehow works if you computer has good base hardware (cpu and gpu side) where the difference is actualy larger

2018-06-05 08:43:44 UTC

but average joes dont have have those computers nor setup their own parameters for gpu access

2018-06-05 08:44:05 UTC

also here is the source for that whitepaper https://www.nvidia.com/object/LO_optimus_whitepapers.html

2018-06-05 08:44:56 UTC

even tho it states that it >completly shuts them but several laptops have been proven just cutting the control cord

2018-06-05 08:44:58 UTC

not power

2018-06-05 08:46:03 UTC

there is reason why nvidia stopped shipping stuff with it after 8 series

2018-06-05 08:46:32 UTC

its so large hit/miss ratio there that it aint even fun

2018-06-05 08:48:11 UTC

and afaik to current date there is no way to force GPU to everything (including windows desktop idling) to prevent screen tearing on high end displays

2018-06-05 09:14:52 UTC

Fuck

2018-06-05 09:15:04 UTC

My Shipment still hasn't gotten here

2018-06-05 09:15:07 UTC

God damnit

2018-06-05 09:15:20 UTC

5PM is the cutoff date
