Tree planting is one of the worst jobs ever from what I've come to understand

2019-02-20 06:39:00 UTC

Partially due to where you're planting them, and partially due to the physical labor involved

2019-02-20 06:39:10 UTC

Cutting them down is also one of the worst/most dangerous jobs

2019-02-20 06:39:27 UTC

Also they're not that hard to plant. Just use an auger.

2019-02-20 06:41:54 UTC

Idk if that'd work for all trees. Some you gotta get pretty deep.

2019-02-20 06:42:13 UTC

Especially if this proposed restoration wants to do a good job of it.

2019-02-20 06:42:43 UTC

If its in already disturbed land it wouldnt be hard at all

2019-02-20 06:43:21 UTC

I suppose you could plant whatever you want but I was thinking it'd probably be better to avoid a huge monoculture of the world's trees.

2019-02-20 06:43:45 UTC

You dont need to dig that deep for saplings?

2019-02-20 06:44:25 UTC

And most trees are planted as saplings btw

2019-02-20 06:44:45 UTC

I suppose not. But idk how many trees you can plant as saplings.

2019-02-20 06:44:47 UTC

Oh well

2019-02-20 06:44:50 UTC

Lots

2019-02-20 06:44:51 UTC

That answers that question

2019-02-20 06:44:58 UTC

Basically every tree

2019-02-20 06:45:26 UTC

Yeah you're overthinking it 😆

2019-02-20 06:46:11 UTC

I talked to some guys who had done a lot of tree planting and they always talked about it like it was the hardest job they'll ever have.

2019-02-20 06:47:27 UTC

So they described doing all of this hard labor and digging holes with spades in the Canadian wilderness up in north Manitoba or north Alberta where the bugs just fuckin eat you alive at all times for low, if any pay.

2019-02-20 06:47:41 UTC

They had to dig manually?

2019-02-20 06:47:54 UTC

Yeah

2019-02-20 06:48:06 UTC

Digging with a shovel is hard work

2019-02-20 06:48:09 UTC

And then they didn't get their commission if they didn't get deep enough because it fucks up the tree.

2019-02-20 06:48:27 UTC

So if you fuck up you gotta go back and fix it

2019-02-20 06:48:39 UTC

You dont need to dig with a shovel though, you could use an auger :P

2019-02-20 06:49:11 UTC

Yeah but in "commercial" tree planting you generally get a shitload of volunteers/uni students to do it for dirt cheap.

2019-02-20 06:49:18 UTC

They usually do it to pad their resumes and whatnot.

2019-02-20 06:49:35 UTC

like 100 people in tree planting camps.

2019-02-20 06:49:37 UTC

I actually need to get one since I've been digging holes all this season and it is back breaking

2019-02-20 06:49:55 UTC

And you cant get them all augurs

2019-02-20 06:50:00 UTC

Seems like the company's are just cheap

2019-02-20 06:50:06 UTC

Pretty much

2019-02-20 06:50:19 UTC

>cut down forests all around
>plant new ones
<:bigbrain:519747550916640769>

2019-02-20 06:50:25 UTC

But not much money to be made in tree planting until you can harvest them for lumber or whatever you want them for.

2019-02-20 06:50:27 UTC

You could employ much less people + more augers and get the same amount of work done.

2019-02-20 06:50:31 UTC

That's actually what happens here Kisaragi.

2019-02-20 06:50:42 UTC

We are so dependent on lumber in Canada that we actually do this already.
