could be wrong about that

2019-11-09 23:38:53 UTC

Whip can refer to other types of antennas such as a long, flexible vehicle mounted antenna

2019-11-09 23:39:51 UTC

makes sense, though I think it's pretty obvious that we're discussing antenna used on portable radios like 148s and such

2019-11-09 23:40:40 UTC

Right, whips, specifically those tape measure style ones you linked.

2019-11-09 23:40:55 UTC

@Red Korvo what're you even trying to do with a radio that requires a whip antenna

2019-11-09 23:41:34 UTC

Someone <@&558119990725705748>’d me by proxy on telegram which one of you

2019-11-09 23:41:38 UTC

I've got whips on my fengs to talk to my frens

2019-11-09 23:42:25 UTC

cause like if you simply want to boost the range on your baofeng a whip isn't entirely necessary, cause then there's whole discussions about UHF vs VFH and what environment you're transmitting in and a lot of other nerd shit that goes into it

2019-11-09 23:43:36 UTC

Pretty much anything you do with a handheld is going to be LOS unless you get a repeater involved. Or possibly HF at night.

2019-11-09 23:43:44 UTC

Basically yeah. Radio seems a little dead in jacksonville, especially APRS, and I'd love to get reliable aprs running.

2019-11-09 23:45:32 UTC

Ham is dead for the most part

2019-11-09 23:45:42 UTC

All the aprs stations are far from me.

2019-11-09 23:45:49 UTC

Then what's replaced it?

2019-11-09 23:45:59 UTC

zoomers with fengs

2019-11-09 23:46:05 UTC

The internet

2019-11-09 23:46:10 UTC

....that's ham @uzidead

2019-11-09 23:46:19 UTC

shrug

2019-11-09 23:46:20 UTC

@All UCP Everything
Long term goal is to get man portable Morse transceiver stations between two teams for long distance comms

2019-11-09 23:46:44 UTC
2019-11-09 23:46:48 UTC

I’m still practicing my Morse

2019-11-09 23:46:55 UTC

neat

2019-11-09 23:47:03 UTC

I’m going to take AE next month

2019-11-09 23:47:04 UTC

@j e F f neat pants. Eat burger and lift heavy things more

2019-11-09 23:47:40 UTC

The internet and cell phones made ham even more niche than it already was

2019-11-09 23:48:21 UTC

HAM is more robust than the internet. It should make a comeback among younger people serious about prepping.

2019-11-09 23:48:25 UTC

It’s just people who like dicking with electronics and prepper/m word types now

2019-11-09 23:48:25 UTC

Tf you want @yergo

2019-11-09 23:48:31 UTC

@tacticoolyourjets that ain't mine

2019-11-09 23:48:34 UTC

Right, but ham is p2p and/or adhoc, and in the case of aprs and other increasingly popular protocols, includes the internet.

2019-11-09 23:48:35 UTC

And just buying ham capable baofengs doesn't cut it

2019-11-09 23:49:03 UTC

Digital comms is the future

2019-11-09 23:49:11 UTC

Get a dual if you can

2019-11-09 23:49:15 UTC

Digital is pretty tight

2019-11-09 23:49:35 UTC

Keep in mind that even a baofeng becomes a digital radio with a cable and an Android device.

This video is a good intro to HAM shit

2019-11-09 23:50:41 UTC

Baofengs have downsides but they're still very useful, especially for beginners.

2019-11-09 23:51:00 UTC

Yea if its just gonna live on your rig id say its more than fine
