My brother put about 3k rounds through his 10/22 and now the recoil spring is crunchy. You can feel the bolt rub against it when you cycle it. He's cleaned it a lot and there's no difference. Any idea what's going on?

2019-11-20 06:40:47 UTC

it sounds like rubbing the spine of a spiral notebook with a pencil.

@Red Korvo replace the spring. Idfk

2019-11-20 07:09:10 UTC

@tacticoolyourjets It looks fine though. A little bit of S curving but isn't that pretty normal?

2019-11-20 07:10:29 UTC

Lube it

2019-11-20 07:10:36 UTC

He did.

2019-11-20 07:11:35 UTC

Maybe it needs more. It seemed reasonable to me but I don't have a good frame of reference.

2019-11-20 07:12:22 UTC

Lube the shit out of it

2019-11-20 07:12:37 UTC

Can't hurt to rule it out.

2019-11-20 07:13:40 UTC

If that doesn't work he should learn to live with the sound or

Replace the spring, which I can't imagine costs very much

2019-11-20 07:15:38 UTC

I just checked. About 10 bucks for a new spring and guide rod.

2019-11-20 07:16:19 UTC

I'm sure it doesn't. We're both just worried that it could be something worse than a defective spring because it looks good. We're both technically capable but new to owning guns.

2019-11-20 07:16:38 UTC

It is weird to have to replace it after only 3k rounds right?

2019-11-20 07:19:14 UTC

I've never owned a 10/22 so I can't say for sure. That's a pretty reasonable amount of cycles for any bolt. Far from the lifetime of the gun, but more than most people ever shoot their gun.
I don't thinking needing to replace a 10 dollar part after that many rounds sounds weird.

2019-11-20 07:20:29 UTC

just buy a new one

2019-11-20 07:20:43 UTC

3k is a lot? Is that because most guns shoot more expensive ammo?
