It's required by the military because their requirements are higher and they probably care about salt water exposure. Its required by the civilian market because they care about looks. Anodization is pretty cheap.

Hard coat anodizing makes parts so much stronger it's depressing that the lot charge is so high and most of the little parts I make for myself never get it
