in 1830 the Lower East Side of Manhattan was a Black Ghetto, with a sizeable poor white criminal population

by 1850 it was almost all Irish with a large Jewish population moving in

from Germany

by 1890 it was almost entirely Jewish and Italian

Bill The Butcher was a member of the Know Nothing Party, that part in the movie Gangs of New York where he dressed in the large stovepipe hats

that identified them as Know Nothings 100% Americanism

In 1830 Baltimore Maryland was a Southern Port Town but between 1830 and 1860 so many Irish, Jews, and Germans moved in that the Know Nothings won the governorship in Maryland

this was how the North was able to occupy Maryland, they had hordes of Immigrants to do it

Something was largely keeping non-whites out until 1965 though

The demographics remained a constant 90% until then

Actually in 1790 the United States was only about 75% white

the White Population increased because of open Immigration

and that was a side benefit

THE DOWNSIDE WAS THAT IT CULTURALLY SHIFTED THE COUNTRY

probably one of the big factors keeping white majority despite open immigration was that the ability to travel to the US From outside CONUS was difficult

The South recovered from the Civil War much better than the North

from a demographic standpoint

This was because Southern women loved having kids and loved sex

they are just hornier in the South
