I've had tons of issues with ATCs in the middle east not knowing i had a clearance, not knowing where I was or that i was supposed to be flying in
And that's even with proper transponder codes and diplomatic clearances.

The only way ATC can identify radar contacts is with assigned transponder codes
Also ATC lost radio contact prior to the crash, usually an indication of an aircraft being shot down
