In generation 7 they said fuck mega evolutions and introduced z moves which are flat out inferior as a game mechanic, as a design choice, as a competitive element, and they're honestly just a gimmick to make sun and moon more unique. Whats especially fucky is that the final z move they introduced, Light That Burns The Sky, is ***literally*** just a way to mega evolve Necrozma into Ultra Necrozma
