A lifelong goal of mine has been to become an author. I am going forward with that. Maybe that can get me out of this hole. You can self publish and make enough to support yourself. And if it gets popular enough, a full publisher will approach you and then you have a stronger bargining position and they can't meddle in your work that way. That's what the author of The Martian did.
