I haven't bought a tape player since the 90's. But usually the major brands are your best bet. I'd imagine you could find buyer reviews.

Only ones I've heard of are Aiwa and Sony.

If it is a cassette tape, all players should play them. They are pretty standardized. The controls are the same as a video player (same buttons). Just remember "Be kind, rewind."
